Paying For College - Five Ways to Get Money For Your College Education

Paying For College - Five Ways to Get Money For Your College Education

More and more young people today are opting to work towards getting a college level education or a college degree particularly since there are a lot of different choices to pay their way through college. In the not so distant past, going to and paying for college would require a lot and I do mean, a lot of money and that eventually leads to not being able to go to college at all. These days, there are several ways of being able to get a college education and degree without struggling financially:

* First option is for high school graduating students to begin looking and exploring options while they are still in high school so they can apply in specific programs and education aids. Today, every state has a 529 college plan that allows an account holder to designate a beneficiary. So by the time college enrollment arrives, there shall be enough money disbursed and can already be used for tuition and other expenses.

* There are also college grants that you need not pay back that are available. Since these grants are need based and come from state and federal grants, there are no monthly or quarterly payments to be worried about. The grant amount or type will be entirely dependent on how much or what you are eligible for, often times there are grants that end up having all the tuition fees paid for and even books and study materials too.

* There are a lot of federal grants that you can get free applications for. You do not have to worry, since it is the state that will be paying for college expenses. All you have to do is find out what you will illegible for. Federal Student Aid Applications not only applies you for federal study aid but will also guide you to the correct application for other state aid. Considered to be one of the best options to paying for college because there are no loans or monthly payments to think and worry about later on.

* Another way to get money for college is by applying for scholarships. High School students can start applying for these scholarships early on as well as adult students that are according to specific dates set by each individual scholarship grant. And again, this is one more kind of funding option or choice that you don't have to worry about paying back.

* And if all else fails, of course there are student loans that can be obtained as well. These types of loans can be applied for either by the parents or the students themselves however, these must be paid back after you finish college. And for this reason, applicants only borrow the amount of money that they really need.

Paying for college has ceased to be the cause of worry and apprehension these days. One only need to go out and find out for themselves what is the best option to be able to get money for college.

I've found one good site that has a lot of excellent scholarships and grant information. Register at that site so you can get access to all of the free college and Scholarship Money Information. They do not charge any money for this service.

7 Things to Consider About College Prep Counseling

7 Things to Consider About College Prep Counseling

Private counseling for college preparation is a growing industry with thousands of people calling themselves educational consultants. Are private counseling services really beneficial? Parents and students should consider a few key points before putting out money for these types of services.

1. Should you pay for college prep counseling?

The competition for acceptance into top colleges seems to get harder each year. In addition to a high grade point average, advanced placement classes, and SAT scores, students may be expected to participate in extracurricular activities as well.

Parents frequently hire private college counselors in the hopes of getting their kids in the right school. However, paying for a counselor might be unnecessary because high school counselors in most cases provide similar advice without any expense. An exception may be when school counseling is inadequate.

2. Do private counselors have any credentials?

There are two major national associations for private college counselors, the IECA and the NACAC, both require members to demonstrate a certain level of experience but don't offer accreditation. Another group, the AICEP, says they require a master's degree in a relevant field, references and a written exam, but they concede that guidelines are flexible. It appears that most counselors have no formal accreditation.

3. Is it too late to benefit from private counseling?

Many colleges use an applicant's GPA and SAT scores during sophomore and junior year, which means that hiring a college counselor later in high school can have little effect. Because they don't want to turn away paying customers, many private college counselors sign up the bulk of their clients later after they get their PSAT scores, but that can be too late.

4. Do college essay services improve chances?

College essay services constitute a growing business niche with numerous companies offering to assist students in focusing and proofreading their essays. The problem is colleges can spot a professionally edited essay. Essays not done in the authentic voice of the student are evident.

5. Are better SAT scores guaranteed?

SAT preparation has become a given in the college admissions process, and classes may help to get ready for the test by teaching certain methods or time-saving strategies. Students can use online prep web sites, which often cost little or no money. Families who hire a tutor should be careful of anyone who guarantees a gain in their score.

6. Are they offering paid scholarship services?

Be wary of companies that offer to sell scholarship seminars. The information you get may be of little value since most scholarship information is available for free online, through your child's high school, and the local groups, nonprofits and corporations that are running the programs.

7. Does a private counselor offer a built-in advantage?

Some college admissions officers say that help from an upscale private consultant could be a detriment to a student's chances. Independent counselors are often seen as a privilege of the advantaged student and that selective colleges struggle against this built-in bias in the admissions process. Parents and students need to be aware that while some services can be helpful, others may be detrimental.

College Campus Safety Tips

College Campus Safety Tips

While out on a date

The unfortunate statistic is that 90 percent of rapes occur between people who already knew each other and that approximately half of rapes happen on dates. This is commonly known as "date rape" or "acquaintance rape."

While sexual assault and rape by an attacker is never the victim's fault, there are a few things women can bear in mind:

Take your time in getting to know your companion or "date." Don't spend time alone with someone who makes her feel uneasy or uncomfortable. This means following your instincts and removing herself from situations that you don't feel good about.

Stay with a group of people. Avoid risky areas, such as deserted areas.

Avoid excessive alcohol. According to the Journal of Studies on Alcohol, more than 70,000 students between the ages of 18 and 24 have been victims of alcohol-related sexual assault or date rape.

Be alert for possible use of "date rape drugs" such as Rohypnol, which is illegal in the United States. Someone can slip it into a drink. It causes drowsiness, a loss of coordination, dizziness and memory loss. Never take drinks from other people and don't leave your drink unattended.

Tell someone you trust your date's name, destination and planned time of return.

Take money for a phone call and taxi fare with you.

More campus safety tips: While walking around campus

Survey the campus after dark to see that buildings, walkways, quadrangles and parking lots are adequately secured, lighted and patrolled.

Avoid walking alone if possible.

Walk with an air of confidence and stay alert.

Walk in lighted areas.

Keep your hand free, not overloaded.

Have your keys ready.

If you are being followed: cross the street, scream, run to an occupied residence or store, or flag down a car.

At dorm rooms

Doors and windows to your residence hall should be equipped with quality locks. Room doors should have peepholes and deadbolts.

Do not loan out your key. Never compromise your safety for a roommate or friend who wants the door left unlocked. Replace locks when a key is lost or stolen.

Use caution admitting strangers.

Have good lighting around entrances.

If you are a woman and live alone or with other women, use only your first initials on your mailbox and, when possible, in phone directories.

Report suspicious activity to campus police--or to the police if you live off-campus.

While in your car

Keep windows up and doors locked.

Park in well-lighted areas and travel on populated, well-lighted streets.

Never pick up hitchhikers.

If you have car trouble, signal for help by raising the hood or tying a white handkerchief to the door handle.

Preparation and awareness are the keys to safety in any situation. Non-lethal self defense and personal protection devices are proven to deter most attackers. Consider carrying self defense devices such as pepper sprays, stun guns, or personal alarms. Learn the correct way to use these types of devices and be committed to using them should a dangerous situation occur. A variety of products are available to meet the needs of most everyone. Through preparation and awareness you will enjoy increased "peace of mind" and confidence knowing you are protected!.
