Bin Laden killed in shootout with US forces
Mon, May 02 06:45 AM EDT
By Steve Holland and Faisal Mehmood
WASHINGTON/ABBOTTABAD, Pakistan (Reuters) -Al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden was killed in a U.S. helicopter raid on a mansion near the Pakistani capital Islamabad early on Monday, officials said, ending a nearly 10-year worldwide hunt for the mastermind of the September 11 attacks.
U.S. officials said bin Laden was found in a million-dollar compound in the military garrison town of Abbottabad, 60 km (35 miles) north of Islamabad. After 40 minutes of fighting, binLaden was among several people in the mansion killed. A source familiar with the operation said bin Laden was shot in the head.
"Justice has been done," President Barack Obama declared in a hastily called White House speech announcing thedeath of the elusive head of the militant Islamic group behind a series of deadly bombings across the world.
Leaders worldwide praised the killing as adramatic success in the war against al Qaeda, a mood reflected in financial markets. The dollar and stocks rose, while oil and gold fell, on theview bin Laden's death reduced global security risks.
However, many analysts cautioned it was too soon to say his death would mark aturning point in the battle against a highly fractured network of militants.
Jubilant, flag-waving celebrations erupted inWashington and New York after Obama's announcement. It was the biggest national security victory for the president since he took office in early 2009 and could give him a political boost ashe seeks re-election in2012.
Obama may now also find it easier to wind down the nearly decade-old war in Afghanistan, begun after the September 11, 2001, attacks on New York and Washington that killed nearly 3,000.
But the operation could complicate relations with Pakistan,a key U.S. ally in the battle against militancyand the war in Afghanistan. Those tieshave already been frayed over U.S. drone strikes in the west of the country and the six-week imprisonmentof a CIA contractor earlier this year.
A U.S. official said Pakistani authorities were told the details ofthe raid after it had taken place.
The revelation bin Laden was living in style will also put Pakistani officials under pressure to explain how he could have been right under their noses. Residents in Abbottabad said a Pakistani military training academy is near the compound.
"For some time there will be a lot of tension between Washington and Islamabad becausebin Laden seems to have been living here close to Islamabad," said Imtiaz Gul, a Pakistani security analyst.
U.S. officials said American forces were led to the fortress-likethree-story building in Abbottabad after morethan four years tracking one of bin Laden's most trusted couriers, whom U.S. officials said was identified by men captured after the September 11 attacks.
"Detainees also identified this man as one of the few al Qaeda couriers trustedby bin Laden. They indicated he might be living with or protectedby bin Laden," a senioradministration official said in a briefing for reporters in Washington.
Bin Laden was finally found after authoritiesdiscovered in August 2010 that the courier lived with his brother and their families in anunusual and high-security building in Pakistan, officials said.
"When we saw the compound where the brothers lived, we were shocked by what we saw: an extraordinarily unique compound," a senior administration official said.
"The bottom line of ourcollection and our analysis was that we had high confidence that the compound harbored a high-value terrorist target. The experts who worked this issue for years assessed that there was a strong probability that the terrorist who was hiding there was Osama bin Laden," another administrationofficial said.
Bin Laden and three adult men, including a son of bin Laden, were killed along with a woman who was used as a shield by a male combatant, officials said.
The New York Times said bin Laden's body was taken to Afghanistan and then buried at sea.
RESIDENT WOKEN BY BLASTS, GUNFIRE
A U.S. helicopter was lost due to a mechanical problem and its crew and assault force safely evacuated, officials said. No Americans were harmed in the operation, Obama said.
"After midnight, a large number of commandos encircled the compound. Three helicopters were hovering overhead," said Nasir Khan, a resident of the town.
"All of a sudden there was firing towards the helicopters from the ground. There was intense firing and thenI saw one of the helicopters crash," said Khan, who had watched the dramatic scene unfold from his rooftop.
Authorities said bin Laden's hideaway, builtin 2005, was about eight times larger thanother homes in the area. It had security features including 12- to 18-foot walls toppedwith barbed wire, internal walls for extraprivacy, and access controlled through two security gates.
It had no telephone or Internet connection.
"It is not a surprise that bin Laden was captured in an urban heartland," said SajjanGohel of the Asia Pacific Foundation.
"Many of al-Qaeda's senior leaders have been captured in Pakistani cities. It had become a myth that the al Qaeda leadership were hiding in caves in the tribal areas."
POSSIBLE REPRISALS
Bin Laden's death triggered a travel alertfor Americans worldwide, the U.S. State Department said, warning of the potential for anti-American violence.
Britain's Prime MinisterDavid Cameron urged Britons to remain vigilant.
"Of course, it does not mark the end of the threat we face from extremist terror. Indeed, we will have to be particularly vigilant in the weeks ahead. But it is, I believe, a massive step forward,"Cameron said.
Thousands of people gathered outside the White House, waving American flags, cheering and chanting"USA, USA, USA." Car drivers blew their horns in celebration and people streamed to Lafayette Park across from the street,as police vehicles with their lights flashing stood vigil.
Similar celebrations erupted at New York's Ground Zero, site of the World Trade Centertwin towers felled by hijacked airplanes on September 11.
"I never figured I'd be excited about someone's death. It's been a long time coming," firefighter Michael Carroll, 27, whose firefighter father died in the September 11 attacks, said in New York. "It's finally here.

William and Catherine marry in London
|
|
Prince William of Wales slipped a gold ring onto the
finger of Catherine Middleton Friday, and the couple
vowed to love, comfort, honor and to keep each other in
London's biggest royal wedding in three decades.
Bells pealed over central London and flag-waving crowds
roared in excitement Friday as Middleton arrived at
Westminster Abbey to marry William, the second in line
to the British throne.
Middleton wore an ivory and white satin dress with lace
sleeves and shoulders, designed by Sarah Burton of the
Alexander McQueen fashion house.
"You look beautiful," the prince told her as she arrived at
the altar on the arm of her father Michael.
William wore the uniform of a colonel of the Irish Guards,
a scarlet jacket and blue sash, as his brother, Prince
Harry, accompanied him into the abbey.
Crowds cheered as his car drove the short distance from
Clarence House to the abbey before the wedding, and
they roared and waved as the newlyweds rode in an
open carriage from the abbey to Buckingham Palace
after the ceremony.
They appeared before hundreds of thousands of cheering
supporters on a balcony of the palace and exchanged a
quick kiss on the lips -- then pecked each other's lips
again a moment later.
Royal Air Force jets then flew over the crowd and the
palace in formation, the official climax of the wedding
celebration.
The couple will be known as the Duke and Duchess of
Cambridge following their marriage, the royal family
announced shortly before the wedding -- thus avoiding
giving the newest member of the royal family any title
that would implicitly compare her to Diana, Princess of
Wales.
The most devoted monarchists arrived days before the
event and camped out with Union Jacks on their clothes,
tents and faces. Some traveled from as far away as
Colombia.
Up to half a million people who didn't get one of the
1,900 invitations to Westminster Abbey were expected to
watch the event on giant screens at Hyde Park in central
London.
Kings, queens, priests and politicians began to arrive at
the abbey shortly after 8 a.m., with celebrities such as Sir
Elton John and Olympic gold medallist Ian Thorpe among
them.

FRIENDSTER: It's a facebook world
|
|
MANILA, Philippines - Say good-bye to Friendster as
you know it. The first social network site is shutting
down its social networking services after 9 years.
Friendster was bought by Money Online (MOL), a
Malaysian company that also owns the Berjaya group
of companies, from its American owners.
Last week, Friendster sent an e-mail to its users
advising them to export their profiles, photos, and
blogs by May 31 or these will all be history. All these
will be erased to give way to the new Friendster
which will be launched in a couple of weeks.
"You can't compete with Facebook. They did a good
job. It's a Facebook world," said Nikolai Galicia,
Friendster and MOL country manager for the
Philippines.
But Galicia clarified that Friendster is not shutting or
closing down. "Friendster will continue. Mag-iiba lang
ang focus niya. After MOL bought Friendster, we are
moving forward. The new Friendster will complement
Facebook."
Friendster will retain its name but will discontinue its
social network services. It will be re-launched as a
social entertainment site where users will be able to
play games and listen to music.
"Fifty percent of FB users don't like games. We will
service the other 50 percent," said Galicia.
The Philippines has the most number of Friendster
users worldwide with an estimated 20 million users.
Galicia said they understand how important Friendster
is to many Filipinos. "Nine years na ang Friendster.
Parang diary na 'yan."
So Friendster has created tools to easily export users'
profiles, photos and blogs where these can be kept.
For instance, photos can be exported to Flickr or
Multiply, and blogs to Wordpress and Blogger.
A user's Friendster profile including comments,
testimonials, messages, shoutouts and treasure chests
can be saved as a document. "[With] a few clicks, it
can be saved like a PDF form. Forever mo na makikita
ang diary mo," Galicia said.
Long time Friendster users like Anne King are sad
about this new development. King said when she got
the e-mail announcement from Friendster, she
immediately exported her entire account. "The earlier,
the better", said King.

A Letter from Jesus
|
|
Ruth went to her mail box and there was only one letter. She picked it up and looked at it before opening, but then she looked at the envelope again. There was no stamp, no postmark, only her name and address. She read the letter: Dear Ruth, I m going to be in your neighborhood Saturday afternoon and I d like to stop by for a visit. Love Always, Jesus Her hands were shaking as she placed the letter on the table. Why would the Lord want to visit me? I m nobody special. I don t have anything to offer. With that thought, Ruth remembered her empty kitchen cabinets. Oh my goodness, I really don t have anything to offer. I ll have to run down to the store and buy something for dinner. She reached for her purse and counted out its contents. Five dollars and forty cents. Well, I can get some bread and cold cuts, at least. She threw on her coat and hurried out the door. A loaf of French bread, a half-pound of sliced turkey, and a carton of milk

BREAKING NEWS: Pinoy binitay na sa China.
|

MANILA, Philippines - Despite the whole nation s prayers and pleadings, China today pushed through with the executions of three Filipinos convicted for drug smuggling. Vice President Jejomar Binay announced the news in a television interview. Hindi po tayo tumigil sa ating paki-usap na kahit isa o dalawa man lang sa kanila ang maisalba. Pero ang malungkot dito, hindi na po tayo napagbigyan at in- execute na po ang ating tatlong kababayan, Binay said. While he incessantly making appeal for clemency for the three, he said the Chinese government was adamant on the request, insisting on the execution of the three convicted drug mules. Binay said that Sally Ordinario- Villanueva, Ramon Credo and Elizabeth Batain were executed through lethal injection. Villanueva, 32, was convicted for smuggling 4,110 grams of heroin on Dec. 24, 2008. Credo, 42, four days later was likewise convicted for smuggling a slightly bigger amount of heroin. Miracles in Japan: Four-
Month Old Baby, 70-Year
Old Woman Found Alive
(Time.com)
Wed Mar 16th, 2011 7:20 AM PHT
- Amid the silent corpses a baby
cried out - and Japan met its
tiniest miracle.
On March 14 soldiers from the
Japanese Defense Force were
going door-to-door, pulling
bodies from homes flattened by
the earthquake and tsunami in
Ishinomaki City, a coastal town
northeast of Senda. More
accustomed to the crunching of
rubble and the sloshing of mud
than to the sound of life, they
dismissed the baby's cry as a
mistake. Until they heard it
again. (See 7 ways to help
earthquake and tsunami victims
in Japan.)
They made their way to the pile
of debris, and carefully
removed fragments of wood
and slate, shattered glass and
rock. And then they saw her: a
four-month old baby girl in a
pink woolen bear suit.
The tidal wave literally swept
the unnamed girl away from
her parents' arms when it hit
their home on March 11. Since
then her parents - both of
whom survived the disaster -
have taken refuge in their
wrecked house, and worried
that their little girl was dead.
Soldiers managed to reunite the
baby with her overjoyed father
shortly after the rescue.
"Her discovery has put a new
energy into the search," a civil
defense official told a local
news crew. "We will listen, look
and dig with even more
diligence after this." Ahead of
the baby's rescue, officials
reported finding at least 2,000
bodies washed up on the
shoreline of Miyagi prefecture.
How the child survived
drowning - or being crushed by
fallen trees and houses -
remains a mystery. (See
pictures of the calamity of
Japan's quake.)
In a nation short on good news,
other rescues have buoyed
morale, too. In Iwate
prefecture, northeastern Japan,
the devastating tidal wave
swept away an elderly woman
along with her entire house -
but it couldn't extinguish her
will to live.
Rescuers found the 70-year-old
alive inside her home on March
15, four days after the black
tidal wave wiped out much of
the region. Osaka fire
department spokesman Yuko
Kotani told the Associated Press
the woman is now receiving
treatment in a local hospital.
She is conscious but suffering
from hypothermia. (See how to
tend to Japan's psychological
scars.)
Elsewhere, 60-year old
Hiromitsu Shinkawa survived
two days at sea by clinging on
to his floating rooftop. He was
discovered 10 miles off the
Japanese coastline. "Several
helicopters and ships passed but
none of them noticed me," he
said after his March 13 rescue.
"I thought that was going to be
the last day of my life." (via
Daily Mail )
