Are You Ready to be Without Power For Several Days or More?
Here in the northeast, we were double-whammied this year over the course of just three months.  Call it freak, abnormal, strange. Or, just call it Mother Nature doing what she does and has done all along.  Hurricane Irene came up the east coast in late August and slammed us with tree and property damage causing wide-spread electrical power outages. Some folks were only out for a day or so. Some more than a week.  Then, just three months later in late October, a wild autumn snow storm hit New England dumping anywhere from a few inches to over a foot of heavy, wet snow. It brought down thousands and thousands of trees and limbs, which in turn brought down power lines. Once again, millions of people were forced into the dark and cold as they lost power. Some for a day and some for almost two weeks. Sales of portable electric power generators soared as a result.  One good place to get them is here at Drill Spot.  Indeed, it would be great to get off the grid altogether and go with something like solar power. Solar power is free, for the most part. All you have to do is to buy the panels to capture the energy. Though these might not be cheap, in the long run they will save a ton of money, and are also great for the environment. It might be hard to run the average house on solar power all of the time, but having a just some of your power coming from the sun can be money saving. More and more companies and homes are using them now, but it has taken a while for solar power to really catch on. It makes you pause and wonder what would happen if the power continues to go out for long periods of time more frequently. Best to plan and be prepared. Going without heat, running water, and electricity for days on end is frustrating and difficult.

New Years Eve CT Means Big Time Fun
There's something about New Year's Eve that makes it very special, even more so when I think about in and around Connecticut. In terms of celebration, there are all kinds of things you can do for New Year's Eve CT that will make the end of the year memorable and fun. The holidays in New England are a magical time with traditional images springing to mind in a Currier and Ives sort of way. Whether it be Thanksgiving or Christmas or New Years, it's hard to beat the gorgeous images of the Connecticut landscape and towns, coated with snow, decked out in holiday greenery and red ribbons and bows on everything from houses to horses.  New Years is particularly special too because of the symbolism of throwing out the old and extending a welcome to the new. Inspiration reigns as everyone looks forward to a new bright year with all kinds of good spirit and vision and optimism. Be sure to celebrate this time of year in any way that suits you, whether it be at home by the fire with your loved one or close family, or out on the town with hundreds if not thousands of other party goers. It's a special time for sure.

The Opportunity Now For Home Buyers
The holidays are almost here and probably the last thing on your mind is buying a house!  But, you would be wise to shift you're thinking on this and actually put some effort into this subject, especially if you are a first-time buyer looking to get out of your apartment or rental condo, or you are ready for a move from your existing home.  Times are tough for sure, but that spells opportunity for those in the know.  Make sure your home is ready for sale too. That means doing any maintenance that you have been lacking such as gutter cleaning and landscaping work and exterior washing and the like.  Look, here's the deal in terms of opportunity striking right now in real estate.. The real estate market has been in a slump for some time now. The dilemma lies in the ample supply of homes across the country. While this is a burden to sellers everywhere, at the same time it's a buyer's market. Now is the time to pinpoint a house for sale that you typically could not afford. With real estate being so low, you can easily find a home that offers plenty of upgrades. Therefore now is the time to take advantage of the real estate market and all it has to offer home buyers. Find the home of your dreams. The first thing you should consider doing is checking out a few websites. Websites like remax.com, realtor.com, and justlisted.com will educate you on what's currently available in your neck of the woods. Personally I prefer homes.com because it doesn't insist that you list your personal information in order to view their listings. Get online today and find a house for sale that suits your family and budget and your goals in terms of location, features, and the surrounding area.

Quick Advice for Buying a Used Car in CT

Both of our vehicles are getting up there in mileage and both around the 10-year old mark.  So, it's possible very soon we'll be looking at getting new cars. But when I say "new", I only mean "new" to us; this time around, we'll be going the pre-owned vehicle route as opposed to buying brand new. I'm starting to do my homework online already and have been looking at used cars for sale in CT to help guide me in the right direction.   By way of a couple of quick tips, I can pass along this much.  When buying used cars, it is best to avoid cars that have extremely high mileage. This is because as the car ages, it will need more repairs. The repairs that go into a used do not necessarily add to the value of the car. Ordinarily, it is less expensive to go for a used car in good shape than to take a bad car and fix it up, even if its price is much lower. So how do you find out if a used car is good enough to buy? Check the car thoroughly before buying. Look at the interior and exterior of the car. Have they been maintained well? What do the maintenance records show about the car? If they do not exist, likely the car has been neglected. Before buying a used car in Connecticut or anywhere for that matter, be sure to take a test drive. Drive in a variety of terrains and take note of the engine. Are there noises in the engine? Is there enough power for a good acceleration? If the owner of the car says that the engine just needs a tune-up, be wary. There are numerous other tips of course, and as I discover them, I'll pass them along. Plus, I'll let you know if and when we pull the trigger on a new used car purchase.

The Many Talents of PDF Files - Who New?
The other day I was tooling around the web trying to find out how you could create a PDF file that had fill-in blanks (fields), like a form.  I was looking to send a sales contract to a new client and instead of doing it the old way involving printing a couple of copies and using snail-mail to get it to the client, I thought I'd look into sending it electronically via email. Side note: I have since discovered a couple of services that specialize in online electronic document signing; I will write about that in another post down the road. Anyway, I also wanted to be able to have the client fill in and email back to me the filled-in document. Turns out this is not as straightforward as you might think.  Along my research however, I found this great site that lists all the amazing things you can do with PDF files. I've been around the block and then some when it comes to computers, the web, and so on, but I learned more than a thing or two about the many diverse things you can do with them, things like merging, language translation, watermarking, password-protecting, text extraction, web uploading, and more.  Check it out here and you too can geek out and find out the many wild-eyed ways you can poke and prod your favorite PDF files from now on!

Treatment For Your Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
If you're feeling tired like, all the time (which seems to be the case with me over the last year or so), you might have a condition known as chronic fatigue syndrome. Unfortunately, medically it's kind of a vague thing. Chronic Fatigue Syndrome is quite a mystery to many physicians. Medical opinions vary as to the causes and symptoms of the conditions. There are also doctors and physicians that doubt the very existence of the disease. The varying effects from person to person make CFS hard to diagnose and treat and can also make finding the right physician a bit of a challenge. If you currently have a good relationship with your doctor, then you’re off to a good start. Even if they are not highly knowledgeable on the topic of CFS, a good rapport with your health care provider will go a long way. Perhaps suggest some medical articles for your doctor to read to become as informed as possible. They shouldn’t mind especially if you already have good communication. Finding a doctor that treats Chronic Fatigue Syndrome can be tricky. One good suggestion is to join a local support group. Not only will you meet people who are suffering from similar kinds of symptoms as yourself, you could also get the names of some reputable physicians who are up to date with current information on Chronic Fatigue syndrome. Whatever you do, do not get discouraged in your search. It can be tough to keep going especially since you feel so drained all the time. You will feel amazing once again when you get over this.

Secret Shopper Pitfalls
When you become a secret shopper, you have to then search for work on a daily basis. Some companies may email you offers if they are in need of someone in your area, but for the most part, you have to search each particular site on a regular basis to find jobs. The jobs are so in-demand that your timing has to be just right or the jobs are swept out from beneath you. Be prepared to have long lists of website addresses and passwords if you become a secret shopper. It is very easy to get your information mixed up, so you have to be organized. If you are not organized, you will quickly find yourself in big trouble. What most people don’t know when they decide to become a secret shopper is how bad the pay can be. The longer you do mystery shopping, the more money you can make, but when you start out, you will be lucky to get three or four dollars for three hours of work. One common job is going to a gas station for a purchase. You must drive there and back, on your own dime, and buy something. You must then come home and fill out a report. This report is often long and detailed. You may get reimbursed for your purchase but the rest comes out of your pocket. You may then get three dollars for your effort.

Not Too Sure About the Effectiveness of Bat Repellent
Got bats? Don't go batty trying to get rid of them. Here's my personal scoop on this. Bats.  Ugh.  They're creepy. They're disease ridden. They even turn into vampires. Well, maybe only in the movies. Still, bats can be a huge problem in any household. Most bat infestations occur in the months of June and July, and may be difficult to resolve. The interesting thing about bats is that most species are harmless to humans, and some people even find them cute (up close). However, an attic full of bats presents the problem of massive amounts of guano (dung), that is filled with ammonia strong enough to kill, in some cases. In addition, some bats are known to be carriers of rabies.  You'll want to protect yourself and your family from these little pests. You need to try some bat repellent methods. There is really no such thing as "bat repellent". These little animals are quite durable, and seem to be resistant to any conventional repellents. There is one chemical so-called "bat repellent" on the market, but it is also harmful to kids and pets.  It's a moist crystal you sprinkle on the attic floors. This chemical bat repellent does very little to rid you of these bat tenants, dries up, and then spreads through the air to the human tenants!

12 Volt Water Pump Makes Mobile Living a Little Easier
Anytime that you see an advertisement for an appliance that works at 12 volts DC, you know that they've thought of yet one more indulgence for the mobile enthusiast: the car lover who likes to kit out his car with every known electronic device, the boating enthusiast who loves the idea of showing off how every convenience of a normal home finds a place in his boat, and of course the cross-country fan who loves the idea of towing his own RV home all over the country. Appliances need to run at 12 volts DC to be able to accept a connection to a standard car battery, the only reliable power source when you are a hundred miles from nowhere.  For the boat or RV enthusiast, the convenience of running water, sometimes even a shower at the touch of a button, can seem like a king's life; and this is made possible by your trusty old 12v water pump.

Reduce Stress Starting Now
Seems that in this day and age of uncertainty no matter where you turn, more and more people are feeling the pinch and feeling stressed out like in no other time.  Stress is a silent killer in terms of the toll it can take on your body, resulting in poor health and all kinds of physical problems. So, knowing how to deal with, manage, and reduce stress are key to better lifestyle. As much as people commonly associate stress as a mental or psychological condition, exercising your physical body can actually be beneficial to making your life as stress-free as possible.

Here two methods you can start using right away to help keep stress at bay: Meditation, and progressive muscle relaxation.

The goal during meditation is to achieve the meditative state, wherein a person enters a deep centering state of mind and focus internally. In the process, you can quiet down your mind, body, and soul. You can also follow a structured meditation, which is something that you practice on a daily basis or unstructured meditation, which is experienced by being in a situation that offers maximum relaxation.

Progressive muscle relaxation is done by a series of muscle tightening and relaxation. The idea for this came about after physical relaxation naturally resulted to mental relaxation, which is why it has been considered by experts as a possible technique to use for stress management. This one will require some muscle activity but anyone can do this easily. You need to spend about 10-20 minutes each day doing progressive muscle relaxation to achieve best results.

Try these techniques now for a calmer, more relaxed body and outlook.

Your Pet Fish Deserve Nice Clean Living Conditions
It must make any aquarium enthusiast cringe, having to feed his fish every day in the same water that they swim in, breathe in and release their bodily wastes in. If it were not for reasons of yuckiness that that such a situation could not be allowed, it would certainly be objectionable for the way this would poison the water and make it incapable of sustaining aquatic life. How do you treat your fish to a better life then? If the fish lived in a natural water body, a pond or stream, there would be enough clean water in the system that all the bodily waste would not make a difference; in a closed water body like an aquarium, it comes down to the owner of the aquarium to do something to constantly clean and freshen the water the fish live in, to give them a reasonable standard of living. Aquarium filters are the answer; though there are so many, they can hardly be called one answer.

Shoes For Youth Sports
Pretty soon it will be fall and that of course means sports for many children in school and those that are home schooled. In fact, they may have already begun to have practice for these fall sports, and that means they may be wearing the same shoes that they were wearing for the rest of the summer. Even if your children are not into sports in an organized manner, they may play them on the weekends, and they should have physical education on a regular basis. That means finding the right youth running shoes for your kids. There are few things to keep in mind. Each year for school, friends I know with kids in school would get a few pairs of shoes for various occasions, but the sneakers were always the most important. I was not really into sports, but I did run around all weekend with my friends when I was younger. No matter what, youth running shoes should be on your back-to-school shopping list. Though children are going to want to get youth running shoes based on how they look and by what the latest styles may be, there is much more to it than that.

Basic Options For Teeth Whitening
Having a bright and beautiful smile is something virtually everyone wants. We’re all told when we are young to brush and floss our teeth, to visit the dentist for cleanings every six months and to avoid coffee and cola so we don’t stain our pearly whites. Most of us don’t take as good a care of our teeth as we should and it can result in yellowish teeth as opposed to striking white ones. With a teeth whitening system that can easily be fixed, and a smile that was once dingy and gray can be renewed to a gleaming white. There are different approaches to cleaning up a smile and the way you go about it is generally based on your budget. If you have a lot of extra money to invest in your teeth a dentist is probably the best place to begin. A dentist can offer suggestions on which teeth whitening system does the best job.

Snoring - Why It Happens
There could be many different reasons why a person would have a problem with snoring each and every night that passes or during their nap times. Snoring can be very irritating to anyone having to listen to it, so if your spouse is or has been complaining about your snoring, then I suggest that you continue reading through this article and do more research online, I am hoping that it will provide you with some insight about why your spouse is snoring so severely each night.  Most people that are told of their snoring each night typically say, "I do not"! Even though you do not realize that you are snoring each night and irritating those having to listen to it, if they are complaining that you do, then chances are, you really do. So, from now on if somebody that you loves says that you are bothering them or keeping them up with your bothersome snoring, you had better be thinking of some changes to make in your life that could prevent you from snoring or at least lessen your snoring each night.

Hair Extensions Have Been All the Rage
Hair extensions, hair weaves, hair integration, call it what you may, but, from second-tier celebrities like Paris Hilton and Jessica Simpson to certified superstars like Britney Spears, the last word in the latest hairstyles today has to be the idea of hair extensions. Certainly, all of the salons easily advertise 100% natural human hair in their hair extension services, and to look at the pretty flower-scented salons, we certainly could not imagine that they got their 100% human hair in any way that could be disturbing. Disturbing or not would actually depend on you; but before you sign on for the latest hairstyles with extensions, perhaps you should hear the story of how those lovely tresses come to be attached strand by strand to yours. It’s quite remarkable actually. It used to be the hair extensions were a lot more expensive than they are today. There were not that many women in European countries or in America who would just go to a barber and ask to have their waist-length hair lopped off. The hair salons where they did come by this precious supply, would have the hair processed and colored to have sold at very high prices.

Workout Your Body and You Workout Your Brain
Think your brain cannot lift weights or run two miles a day? Well, technically, it can't do those things on its own, but when your body gets fit via these activities, so too does your brain. Cool right? Could physical fitness be so closely intertwined with mental fitness as to be practically the same thing? If part of your New Year's resolution last January was about getting yourself more motivated to work out, to turn fit as a fiddle, this could maybe give you a kick in the pants: Scientists are finding more and more evidence, and they are doing the research for this, that a good deal of exercise turns not just your body into this well-oiled machine; it does this for your brain too. Maybe you've heard of news like this before, but only in the context of older people who could fight senility by going out for a walk a bit. But this recent research doesn't go to anything that limited; young, middle-aged or old, exercise gives everyone a real brain fitness boost. Check out a great article about this here and see that this fact does not just apply to those folks with Alzheimer's disease

More and More Identity Theft
The whole notion of identity theft is quite creepy if you ask me.  It seems too that it continues to be on the rise. Seems more and more there are reports coming out of scams and other setups that exist to get people to hand over personal information that is just the thing the thieves are after. The idea of identity theft to some people seems to be either downright sleazy (think con artists rooting about in garbage cans for scraps of information) or plain high-tech (school kids who are computer wizards using their spare time "gainfully"). You think about all the little clues and leads and investigative work  they put in to take you to the cleaners. Not to put a damper on these entertaining visions or anything, but actually, a large number of identity theft cases happen only through people who can't help being really careless - you know the kind - people who leave their laptops in the waiting lounge at the airport to go to the bathroom, or silly printer errors, a purse sometimes carelessly left about. Unfortunately, it doesn't take a lot for a skilled con to get the information he needs to then take the next steps and do quite a bit of damage in terms of wrecking your identity. Sad but true

Enjoy Great Summer Time Salads on This July 4th Holiday
It's the 4th of July, Independence Day here in the good ole USA! Is this a great country, or what?  Love this holiday! So much tradition, so much fun, so much food! Can you say outdoor summer picnic? And what better time to talk about, make, and eat summer salads! Yum! There are some common salads that you may have every summer. For the most part, these are all going to be cool and cold salads, as many do not want to have warm varieties when picnicking in the hot sun. You can use some of the tried and true that you love, but you may also want to see what you can come up with on your own. You can use some simple staples to see what type of summer salad recipes you can come up with to wow your guests or even just yourself (nothing wrong with that!). Some will be so good you will use them for every summer after and perhaps other seasons and times of the year, like I do. You can think about the basic ingredients that you already use in summer salad recipes. Those might be things like mayonnaise, vegetables, potatoes, rice, dressings, and pasta. Most good summer salads have at least one of these included, and your newer recipes can be the same. In fact, you may just want to take some of those simple summer salad recipes that you have always used and turn them into something new. Think about different additions that can make a good salad into a great one. There's so much you can do, so many different ingredients you can try. Experiment and have fun!  Above all, make it a joyous, but safe, July 4th holiday!

A Healthy Living Counselor Can Guide You To Better Health
It truly saddens me, especially this time of year, as I travel about taking day trips during the summer to the beach, park, museum, batting cages, restaurants, and so on, to see so many people who just look unhealthy, unfit, and as a result, unhappy. I try very hard to stay in shape, eat right, watch my sodium intake levels, exercise by walking and jogging and weight lifting, and managing my stress through relaxation and yoga.  Why are so many people in pursuit, even if by default, of an unhealthy way of living?  There are so many resources available if they just take a little time to look. Here's one: The most important healthy living resource is in the Internet. It's filled with tips on eating right, getting a good workout, staying with your weight loss goals, and establishing healthy habits. That's where I've turned to find out just about all that I know about healthy living. Nonetheless, it can get a little bit overwhelming when you don't have anyone to support you. One thing you can do to help in this regard is to do what my neighbor did and that was to seek out and use the services of a healthy living counselor. They really do exist!  You can find one by searching online (there's that Internet again!). Such a person can really change your life for the better. The one my neighbor went to was a dietitian, massage therapist, psychologists, and workout fanatic. According to my neighbor,  the counselor would sit down with you, helps you write down your own goals and ideas about what you want to accomplish, and then gives you strategies. Some weeks she gives plenty of tips on healthy recipes, staying with exercise goals, and persevering in the face of adversity. Other weeks, you simply check in with her and chat for a little while. The important thing is to have someone to talk to you every week to keep you on track as you travel on this wonderful journey to transform your life into one which is happy and above all, healthy.

For Those Interested in the Creole Nature Trail
The Creole Nature Trail is a two-lane state highway in southwestern Louisiana. It forms a 180-mile loop between Lake Charles and the Gulf of Mexico, through Calcasieu and Cameron Parishes. Natural and recreational intrinsic qualities highlight the Byway, which became a National Scenic Byway in 1996. The Creole Nature Trail passes through an area with miles of Gulf Coast beaches, marshlands, alligators, and four National Wildlife Refuges. The intrinsic quality analysis conducted as part of the Corridor Management Plan contained three parts: an inventory, an assessment, and management strategies. Two University of Louisiana graduate students in Landscape Architecture assisted the Intrinsic Quality Subcommittee of the Creole Nature Trail Scenic Byway District to produce the analysis.

You Can Find Seismic Faults on the Earth
Faults are where large blocks of the Earth's crust move past each other. At plate boundaries, they are most often stuck tight, but at times they lurch several feet in a great earthquake. Living near faults is a fact of life for many Californians, but how do you recognize an active fault? Some faults, called creeping faults, move very slowly all the time. Structures like bridges, sidewalks, and buildings built astride these faults will be offset as the faults slowly move (up to a half inch each year). You can find these faults by looking for bent or offset curbs and sidewalks. Not every offset curb is a fault, but if you find several features that all line up, you may have found a fault. However, most faults don't creep, so geologists look for effects faults have on the landscape. Natural features like streams, valleys, and ridges can be offset from repeated earthquakes if they cross the fault. Here is an index of seismic faults in the United States.  Pretty cool!

Having Bad Credit Does Mean You Cannot Get That Car
You need to know that even if your credit score happens to fall on the wrong side of the tracks, so to speak, you still don't have to go to lending businesses that specifically deal with people who wish to buy a car with bad credit. Those lenders wish to deal with no one but people with terrible credit. They aren't equipped to deal with anyone was even marginally acceptable credit. Go there, and you will always find yourself railroaded into the most unfair credit terms possible. Those lenders happen to be your very last resort. You need to shop everywhere you can, to see what the different lenders think about your credit score. Credit scores aren't ironclad numbers. They are open to interpretation. Try to find a lender who is given to interpreting things a bit liberally.

Budgeting Software is Just the Thing I Need To Improve My Finances
I’m looking to get a better handle on my financial situation, especially in terms of what and where our income turns into outgo! I need a budgeting tool, that much I know. Ugh…. budgets. It’s enough to make your eyes glaze over, right? But, no matter how you look at it, there’s the thing about a good household budget: It’s a requirement for good money management. There’s no need to have a negative attitude about budgeting (even though I just “ugh” earlier!). The key is to stop thinking about budgeting as a difficult task or a punishment for being an impulsive spender. And stop thinking about it as a financial diet. A budget is simply a tool to increase your consciousness of how and where you spend your money. It is also guideline to help you spend your money on the things that are most important to you. To make the whole thing more manageable, a tool is needed. A budgeting tool is software that is used to enter expenditures and serves as a guide to follow your budget. Such a tool is a system that will make the budgeting processes easier and more accurate and can be used to assess how you’re doing with your money in terms of expenditures during the year more accurately. Sounds like a winner to me… off to find a personal finance budget management tool that will be easy to learn and use and effective in its job.

Getting Video Games the Lazy Way
As far as getting and watching movies at home, Netflix is a great way to to since you get movies through the mail quickly and easily. This means you don’t have to leave your home to get them and they come one after another if you want them to (so many Blockbuster stores are out of business now anyway, so just as well). What you may not know is that there is also a very affordable service just like Netflix, but it deals with video games of all types. This is not something that works for everyone, however, and that means the video game stores out there are going to stay in business. If you like these, don’t fret too much about them disappearing. By the way, my favorite gaming store is GameStop (my boys love it too). Now that video game stores have virtual competition, they are doing the same things that video rental stores are doing. They are offering good deals on rentals if they have them, and also offering more benefits to shopping in their store. This is because they want you to get things through them that you won’t get through any type of video game store mail offer. Most of these are different in that they sell games, and any rental services can take away from those sales. That meant discovering ways to make things better for the average gamer.

Great Lights in the Bathroom
The thing about bathrooms these days is, that no one just wants a place to take a shower in anymore. What they are really after is a kind of spa resort right in their homes. They want to be able to come in, and take the weariness of the day off in beautiful surroundings and soft lighting – with a great shower massage and anything else that they can afford to put in their bathroom. People don’t just light up their bathrooms to be able to see around anymore. Lighting comes as part of the design now, and it extends the ambience that the designer tries to create all over. Designing spa-like bathrooms can be expensive, and if you can find a place to shave a little something off the price tag of your bathroom design, then so much the better. Getting discounted bathroom light fixtures is a great way to save a spot of money. The retailers that sell them are out there. You just need to know where to look.

A Bit About Memory Loss and Its Causes
There are a number of factors that can contribute to memory loss. I’ve been doing some research on this lately. One of the causes of loss of memory is having too much going on in your mind at once. For a long while, I tried to take on too many projects at the same time and found that my brain was fried at the end of the day. I got to where I could not remember telling people certain things and would repeat myself over and over again. Of course, there are other memory loss causes that can be much more serious, such as dementia or Alzheimer’s disease, but these usually don’t occur until later in life. The fact of the matter is that memory loss causes can be attributed to many factors. They can be relatively harmless and easily remedied with sleep or by removing the clutter from your mind in some cases. But sometimes, they are serious and need immediate attention. Regardless of the reason, whatever it is that is affecting your memory should be investigated and addressed.

Why I Sometimes Write With a Mechanical Pencil
I love writing, especially creative writing. And when I do, many times I prefer to use a mechanical pencil. There is good reason for my choice. Pens have never been kind to me. They often leak and I really don’t like the idea of getting too attached to anything I put down on paper. The mechanical pencil is the idea writing tool for someone like me who often needs to stray from the keyboard and loves to go freehand on paper and doodle and jot notes all over the page as ideas spring to mind. What’s more, I love editing my writing without mess. Now you may be asking: Why not compose on the computer? Well I do with some of my writing like technical stuff and sale copywriting, but sometimes I just crave and need the physical connection to actual paper, as strange as that may seem. See, we use different areas of the brain when we compose by hand than we do when we compose on the keyboard. I find that in many instances my most creative writing has to be written out by hand and with a mechanical pencil. By the way, my brand of choice is Pentel — just love those pencils! Now you may be wondering why any other pencil won’t do. I hate to seem too fussy. I will use other writing instruments in a pinch but I often draw while I write. It helps to get me inspired. Regular pencils need to be sharpened too frequently and other mechanical pencils tend to run out quickly so that’s why I use the brand I do.

Troy Tulowitzki Swings One Time But Connects Two Times For a Base Hit
Tulo was jammed a bit on the fourth-inning offering from CC Sabathia(notes). Amazingly, or maybe more so luckily, he was able to almost catch that ball with his bat, holding it in place to make contact again with the end up of the bat. The result was a knuckling line drive just over the head of Alex Rodriguez(notes).

Both broadcast teams described the contact as a broken-bat single based on the double-crack sound, but a closer inspection on the video you see below shows it hit the bat twice.

Take a closer look for yourself. And listen for the sound.

via sports.yahoo.com

This is just too cool! It took place the other day (Saturday) in the Yankees/Rockies game (okay, as a Red Sox fan, I'm sorry the Yanks won, but that's beside the point here!). Tulo takes a swing and actually makes contact with the ball two separate times! There's a video clip on the page and when you watch it, you can actually here two distinct cracks as well, one for each little "hit-let" of the ball. Amazing. The commentators actually thought there was a broken bat on the play, but it there wasn't

Good Pumpkin Carving Photos To Use For Making Jack O Lanterns
I was looking recently for pics of carved pumpkins. I’m starting to create a file now so that I’ll be ready when Halloween rolls around in a few months. Found a really good one (gross, but different) in which the guy who’d done the jack-o-lantern had taken the innards – the seeds, strings, sinews and otherwise – and arranged them in a manner to make the jack-o-lantern look like it was vomiting. It was disgusting to say the least, but absolutely hilarious. The other best of the carved pumpkin pictures I’ve seen was of a large pumpkin, this time carved with a fierce mien. Two narrow, angry eyes, a nose, and then a gigantic mouth filled with large fangs. Sounds like a normal jack-o-lantern, but again it had a special surprise. This one’s was a smaller pumpkin, itself carved with a look of astonishment on its face, shoved into the gaping mouth of the larger, fierce pumpkin. It ended up looking like the larger pumpkin was eating the smaller pumpkin, it cracked me up, and it’s a jack-o-lantern I’ll end up making myself this October though it will probably turn out nowhere near as good.

Cork Bulletin Boards - A Low Tech Method To Get Organized
What with computers, laptops, smart phones, PDAs, tablets, and other gadgets so prevalent in this high-tech modern age, it seems that everyone uses digital methods of keeping track of important information. We manage the names and addresses of our contacts on these things, and we have virtual calendars to manage our busy schedules. When we need to jot down a memo, we don’t actually reach for a pen and paper. Instead, we’re more likely to tap the info into our cell phones for future reference. It’s enough to make one long for the simplicity of cork bulletin boards! Personally, I like cork bulletin boards because they allow me to see everything at a single glance (I also use a white board to record key ideas and items up where I can see them at will at a glance). On the bulletin board, I can pin up all kinds of documents, memos, and schedules, and not have to navigate through a hundred different screens in order to find what I’m looking for. That’s why I have several cork bulletin boards around my home and office. They look a bit old school for sure, but they certainly make my life easier.

Adorable Word Sounds Young Children Utter as They Learn To Talk
I'm fascinated by how young children learn, from crawling to walking to making sounds to talking. I was just thinking today about my two boys back when they are just really little guys.  My youngest one said police car in a way only we could appreciate: He would hear a siren or see a picture in a book and say foe weese car which to say it back and even spell it is quite funny.  I can remember the true joy in watching and listening to them as they began to form words.  It's great because you really have to listen and do a sort of translation. Of course, to them, they are saying the word they hearing, but to us, as adults and parents, we hear the literal as it comes out of their mouth. For example, my oldest son used to say wock wawff for wash cloth!  So many examples like that

Outside Today on the Trail Bike and Learning to Balance While Not Moving
Gorgeous day today so it's time to get the trail bike out and get a few miles in. One of the great things about trail bikes is that you don't need a serious outdoor trail to enjoy them. You are as likely to see a trail bike riding down the street as you are on a narrow, thickly wooded trail. With a road bike, you can only use certain well-paved streets and trails to ride on. With an off road bike, however, you can go pretty much everywhere. You'd be amazed if you saw some of the downhill biking trails that I have been on. They are unbelievably steep, and it is all you can do to hang on and keep the bike under control. I'll be biking today but on terrain that is a lot more friendly, I can tell you that!  One of the things I'm looking to master is to balance on the bike while not moving. Here's a video I found that covers this. Good stuff!
