Critic's Notebook: Who really owns Gershwin?
Recent recordings of George Gershwin's concert works and 'Porgy and Bess' may not be Americans' idea of Gershwin — but is Gershwin, played with love and care and imagination.

"Who says that only Americans know how to play Gershwin?" asks Gramophone magazine this month as it hails a new Gershwin CD from the Leipzig Gewandhaus, the German orchestra that calls itself the world's oldest. "By this time possibly nobody," the British record guide answers its rhetorical self.

Belle Brigade: A pop duo that's kin tight
Brother-and-sister pop duo the Belle Brigade seem born to perform together.

In an early homemade video made by the L.A. band the Belle Brigade for its song "Losers," from the sibling duo's self-titled debut, Barbara and Ethan Gruska, ages 28 and 21, respectively, sit holding acoustic guitars in an empty bathtub. They're wearing white robes and Barbara has a towel wrapped around her head, as though she's just gotten out of the shower.

Movie review: 'Making the Boys'
The documentary reveals just how bound up Mart Crowley's 1968 play 'The Boys in the Band' is with the history of the gay community.

It may be hard for those who grew up watching "Will & Grace" to imagine the shock and excitement when Mart Crowley's "The Boys in the Band" caught fire off-Broadway in 1968, becoming one of the most discussed, derided and defended dramas of its era.

Wedding music fit for a prince and his bride
William and Kate's wedding music is also being kept under wraps, which leaves us free to speculate. A little 'Water Music,' anybody?

Prince William and Catherine Middleton are stylish young Britons, well-placed to encourage the monarchy into the 21st century, beginning with their wedding Friday morning. Like the dress, the cake and the honeymoon, the details of the wedding music have been kept secret. William and Kate will no doubt have encountered a problem familiar to all engaged couples: balancing their taste with that of their respective families.

Grand ambitions for the Airborne Toxic Event
With sophomore album 'All at Once' out this week and a new round of performances on the road up ahead, the Airborne is riding high.

In an empty bar in Hollywood, the members of the Airborne Toxic Event have come to jam. They're here with a small hi-def video crew to capture a live performance of the song "Changing," accompanied by a young group of step-dancers called the Strikers All-Stars. "We haven't actually practiced this yet," says singer Mikel Jollett with a smile, as he straps on an acoustic guitar, "so it will be real and not Memorex."

Comic-Con International: Scott Pilgrim is ready to put up a fight
The graphic novel character hits the big screen with 'Scott Pilgrim Vs. the World.' Michael Cera stars as Pilgrim, who must do battle with his the seven evil exes of his heart's desire.

If a geek-chic lifestyle came with a primer, it might read something like Bryan Lee O'Malley's "Scott Pilgrim" graphic novels. A six-part series influenced equally by rock 'n' roll and old Nintendo games, O'Malley's tale of one hopeless romantic's quest to win the girl of his dreams is filled with relationship-challenged characters who come of age the same way Mario and Luigi battle pixilated turtles — with a kick, a jump and a prayer for a second chance. Now, five years after writer-director Edgar Wright phoned the then-Toronto-based artist to option his work, "Scott Pilgrim Vs. the World" is poised to become a breakout sensation at Comic-Con International. The film, helmed by the fan favorite behind the cult comedy sendups "Shaun of the Dead" and "Hot Fuzz," stars indie-film heartthrob Michael Cera as Scott Pilgrim, an insecure musician forced to battle the seven evil exes of the object of his obsession, Ramona Flowers ( Mary Elizabeth Winstead). She's out of his league, and to win her he has to fight for her — literally.

Musical acts' summer tours encounter heavy weather
With CD sales diving, top artists are seeking to recoup lost revenue with tours, creating a glut at a time of economic contraction. 'It's brutal out there,' says one manager of alternative music acts.

This summer, the music industry has been repeatedly rocked — not by big beats, keening vocals and loud guitars, but by lackluster ticket sales and concerts canceled by a growing list of major artists.

La Roux takes its best shot
With hits such as 'Bulletproof,' the British duo fronted by Elly Jackson is being embraced in the U.S. It'll play sold-out Club Nokia in L.A.

Elly Jackson has never felt comfortable in girly clothing. In a pop world of in-your-face sexuality and scantily clad stars tiptoeing around in high heels, the singer for British synth-pop duo La Roux would rather wear flats. But when she explains this to photo-shoot stylists, they seem baffled, says Jackson. "They don't think you're serious. Like, 'Seriously, you don't want these Jimmy Choos?' No, you could give me a room of them and I wouldn't care. But if you put me in a room of Gucci loafers, I'd live in there."

Opera is Rufus Wainwright's 'main squeeze'
The creator of 'Prima Donna' is not one himself when it comes to his varied musical career.

Classical music is often maligned for its apparent insistence that aspiring acolytes display proper credentials before becoming a true follower. Once admitted to the fold, you must bow to the altar of knowledge and denounce uncomplicated pleasure as the ultimate blasphemy. No matter what denomination you choose (chamber music, new music, opera, orchestra), you can be sure the repertoire is studded with landmines, the detonation of which will instantly out you as a Philistine or worse: not serious.

The sweet Smell of success
Downtown L.A.'s all-ages venue comes of age, with a weekend of what it does best -- avant-garde noise -- planned for its 12th anniversary celebration.

Freedom has a price, and for L.A.'s all-ages music venue, the Smell , the freedom to present new and inexpensive shows has meant surviving as a lonely downtown outpost. Ensconced in a nondescript building in one of the city's less-frequented corners, the Smell has redeemed its geographical undesirability by championing hordes of up-and-coming punk and avant bands, noise artists and other acts just too plain bizarre to categorize.
