Alcohol Awareness Class Needed for Anti-Alcohol Advocate |
In life you must practice what you preach. As a parent you want to role model the behavior guidelines you establish for your children. If you are going to be vocal about not drinking alcohol or abusing drugs, you had best refrain from using them as well.
If you don’t practice what you preach, the bounce back can be quite embarrassing. Take the case of Ron Rose.
The 44-year-old from Perthshire in the United Kingdom has long been a staunch anti-alcohol advocate. Rose has campaigned vigorously against alcohol-induced anti-social behavior. You might think he is a tee-totaler or something.
Practice What You Preach
Obviously if I am writing this blog, Rose does not practice what he preaches. Recently police were tipped off that Rose was driving while intoxicated. Police pulled him over and found him to be more than three times the legal limit!
Wait, it gets better. Rose was sentenced to five months in prison! Why such a big sentence. Oh, did I forget to mention this was his third driving under the influence violation. Nice, huh?
This is another example of a blow-hard who does not practice what he preaches. Perhaps a nice online alcohol class, while he’s in jail, might be the ticket. |

Great Musicians Need Drug Awareness Class |
Marijuana has long been a part of the art culture. Musicians have especially been known to smoke the “peace pipe.” There was a time I too believed it enhanced my creative abilities (I had written an episode of “Seinfeld” while under the influence of THC). Of course, we all know that drugs and alcohol impede artistic creativity and slow the creative process.
Those busted for marijuana use span generations. Two musicians who have been notoriously busted for marijuana use will be mentioned here. Remember they are not role models, and their use of drugs and alcohol drastically hurt their careers and wasted some of their talent.
Louis Armstrong
Many of you may not be able to remember Louis Armstrong. As a world-class jazz musician, Armstrong was known for his powerful trumpet.
It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out that smoking anything would not help your lung capacity. Armstrong holds the title of being the first musician arrested for marijuana possession when he was busted in 1931!
Hoyt Axton
Moving forward 60 years, this country great was busted in grand fashion back in 1997 when he and his wife were arrested after police found more than a pound of marijuana in his Montana home.
His wife claimed she had been administering the weed medicinally to help easy Axton’s discomfort following a stroke two years earlier. Marijuana is illegal for all purposes in Montana and both Axton and his wife went to jail for a short time.
These are just two musicians who have been busted for illegal drug use, specifically marijuana. Despite the current liberal view toward marijuana, it is important to remember that the American Medical Association does not recommend it for any physical or mental ailment! |

Random Drug And Alcohol Testing |
Random drug and alcohol screening is used by many UK companies to deter the use or abuse of illegal drugs and / or alcohol by employees within the workplace. There have been a large number of case studies to demonstrate how effective random screening is in reducing accidents, absenteeism, ill health, litigation, etc, and as a result it is frequently considered to be best practice, especially in safety critical environments. Even when a business doesn't introduce full random drug testing, they often choose to conduct testing when there is a problem - such as incident or accident based screening or "for cause" testing when there are sufficient grounds to suspect that an employee is not fit to perform their duties due to drink or illegal drugs.
How often random drug and alcohol testing should be carried out can be determined by the business based upon a number of factors. Such factors include the nature of the business, demographics of their staff or factors relating to the culture of the business – for example, a culture of lunchtime drinking. Some companies carry out as little as 5 percent random testing (i.e. only 5% of staff are drug tested just once per year after being randomly selected), whereas other businesses may insist that every employee is screened at least once annually or more. It really depends upon the cost, certain health and safety considerations and their own drive to enforce a drug and alcohol free workplace.
Substance abuse screening in the workplace is relatively straight forward to implement and can be put into place without much expense when done correctly. Random testing of company employees can be carried out on-site for less than $10 per employee. All a company needs to do is formulate a drug and alcohol policy - which is basically the business's views on drugs and alcohol, what is deemed acceptable, what isn't, and what are the consequences of breaking the rules - along with procedural information. Many companies have consultation with staff and union representatives to be sure that the company policy was developed with input from all concerned parties.
If companies find this process to be too time consuming or complex for your managers, we can develop your policy for you as consultants, or review your current draft policy to ensure that it is completely legally defensible and user friendly. Our years of experience really can make a significant difference to your company policy and allows you to implement it as fast as possible. When you have a finished drug and alcohol policy, it is time to issue a copy of this to your employees along with an implementation date. As long as the start date for the policy is further away than their contractual notice period, when the start date arrives, the policy has become part of all employees' terms and conditions of employment. At this point, if it is your policy that employees undergo random drug / alcohol screening or testing in accident / incident or "for cause" situations, then failure to comply constitutes a failure to undertake a reasonable request - which may have disciplinary consequences up to and including dismissal.
Ultimately, it should be every employer’s goal to remove the substance from the individual, rather than the individual from the workplace, so assistance for those who come forward to seek it is vital. To reinforce a drug and alcohol testing policy it is a good idea to train managers in drug and alcohol awareness so that they can spot the signs and symptoms of drug misuse and understand how to deal with the situation should it arise. The majority of our business customers choose a half day of training for their managers.
If you found this of interest, be sure to check out the drug test kits in the online catalogue. |

Alcohol Awareness Class Help NBA Hall of Famer |
Yesterday I wrote about how two members of the Class of 2011 inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame had histories with alcohol addiction. Dennis Rodman, also known as “The Worm” has continued his hard partying ways and appears headed for an early date with the cemetery.
The second alcoholic in the Class of 2011 is a success story. Do you know him? He is Chris Mullin. The sharp-shooting lefty who graduated from St John’s University was a notorious beer drinker.
After a stellar collegiate career, Mullin was just a blip on the NBA radar his first two seasons as a member of the Golden State Warriors. When Don Nelson became head coach in Mullin’s fourth year, he had no idea how life-changing it would be. Under Nellie’s guidance Mullin had found a mentor who he trusted. Nelson saw how much beer Mullin was putting away and urged him to go to rehab.
One good stint in Centinella Hospital in Los Angeles, California and Mullin’s career and life took on new meaning. Sober Mullin went on to average more than 25 points per game and was one of the league’s most prolific shooters.
Mullin is a virtual poster-child for seeking alcohol rehabilitation in order to achieve your true potential. I am not one to say that athletes or other celebrities are role models, but Mullin’s sobriety did have an effect on me personally. |

Stop Denying Your Drinking Problem |
Generally when I teach alcohol awareness classes I question my students, “Do you think you have a drinking problem?” This series of articles will discuss what constitutes a “problem” and recognize that your social drinking has turned into a problem-drinking habit. It will also talk about 3 stages of change – denial, anger, and acceptance. Finally, we will talk about strategies for stopping drinking and preventing a return to drinking patterns.
Let’s begin by stating that no person has one drink and immediately it is a problem. Heavy drinking and alcoholism are developed over long periods of time.
How people in my class answer this question may be shocking to you. But first, let’s take a look at what defines heavy drinking and briefly talk about problematic alcohol consumption patterns.
How Many Drinks Do You Consume Weekly? Daily?
As a reformed alcoholic and graduate of an online alcohol class, I first became aware that there possibly was a problem when I read an fascinating question on a new patient form at my primary care physician It read, "What quantity of alcoholic beverages do you consume every week?” The query itself seems innocent enough. The multiple-choice answer was “A. 0. B. 1-3. C. 4-6. D. More than 6." I had to read the question again to recognize if they weren’t really asking per day.
At that point in my life, still 24 months before I became sober, I was having at least 7 alcoholic beverages per day. Whether shots of hard alcohol, glasses of wine, or beer, I was most definitely in the “D” category – but every day.
That was my original lightening rod of truth, where I really figured out, for a few tiny moments, that I might very well have a drinking problem – and that I was an alcoholic.
Are You a Heavy Drinker?
Heavy drinking is a pattern of alcohol consumption found in almost all alcoholics. Heavy drinking is defined as having five or more alcoholic beverages at one time five or more times in a month period. As a reformed alcoholic, I can tell you that almost every time I partook in the consumption of alcohol, I had at least 5 drinks – usually many more.
Recent statistics show that approximately 17 million U.S. residents are classified as heavy drinkers. That is almost 7% of the entire population 12 and older. If you only pay attention to people who can legally drink almost 12% are heavy drinkers.
If you think your are a heavy drinker, it's quite likely you are an alcoholic and should seek help from a group like Alcoholics Anonymous, or in some cases try taking an online alcohol awareness course. |

Your Daughter Needs a Drug Class |
Your back is flaring up again. You head to the medicine cabinet and pull out your Vicodin (which of course you only use when your cotton-picken’ back goes out. Your bottle is almost empty. You could have sworn you had just refilled the prescription last time you had needed your medication. There should be almost 30 pills in the bottle.
You know you’re not crazy. You ask your wife if she had to take any of your pain medication. She says no. There is only one other person living in the house - your daughter. What do you do? How do you handle this situation?
Intervention and quick response are key. First, if you are reasonably certain it is your daughter you can either confront her first, or catch her in the act (count the pills and when one goes missing confront).
Prescription drug abuse is as bad as any other - marijuana, cocaine or alcohol. You need to take immediate steps. A good drug class is a place to start. Perhaps an online drug class you can take together.
The key is to address the situation right away. Arm both yourself and your daughter with information on the dangers of drug abuse. |

Dennis Rodman and Other Athletes Need Alcohol Classes |
There is no doubt a professional athlete’s career is stress-filled and does not last very long. Unless you happen Jamie Moyer, the Colorado Rockies’ 49-year-old starting pitcher, the likelihood of your career last more than a decade is very slim.
Many athletes try desperately to extend their careers, and despite once being given huge sums of cash and being admired by fans around the world wind up on in God-forsaken countries earning little money.
Some of these players turn to drugs and alcohol to console themselves in the twilight of their “careers.” These athletes no longer have the support of an organization that will get them the help they need. Often the players themselves refuse to admit they have a problem and will not try to get help for a problem they are in denial about.
A textbook case is former NBA all-star Dennis Rodman. Rodman’s alcoholism has been chronicled on both a reality show about him and an appearance on Dr. Drew’s “celebrity Rehab.” |
