I reserve a special category of my filmgoing experiences to ?problem films,? that rare breed of film that leaves me completely bamboozled. Usually, it?s the work of an auteur on an off-day, failing to fulfil the full bargain of a complete work of art but leaving such personality and atmosphere on the flawed finished product that I can?t help but be fascinating. Think of Welles? The Lady From Shanghai, Chaplin?s Limelight, Peckinpah?s Straw Dogs or the daddy of problem pictures, Francis Ford Coppola's Apocalypse Now.

| So what is Dystopia? It is usually associated with the state of a country, society, or civilization that is very oppressed, overcrowded, and full of misery. Many of these "fictional" societies gives no illusions of freedom and openly oppresses it's people. It usually has the feel of a police state or under the influence of martial law. The system represses and coerces the population into being submissive/passive. Sometimes it is caused by chemicals or drugs, mind control, or by an overwhelming use of technology. Many know the truth about the laws of the land, but are kept from disobeying by crippling fear of unjust punishment.
Another type of dystopian society is just the opposite, it gives the illusion of freedom to its citizens, though in truth they are slaves to the system. The few that come by the knowledge of the truth about their society quickly disappear in the middle of the night, taken to re-education camps or executed. In most cases the oppression has gone on for so long that the affected people can no longer comprehend any other way of life. While some of these have been given the illusion of being a utopian culture, they are truly dystopian underneath the shroud.
One thing they all have in common is that 0.001% of the population lives in enormous luxury and in control of everything, while the rest of society lives in squallor and misery. |
