Europe’s Most Interesting Islands|
|Want to experience the most interesting island holiday destinations that Europe has to offer? Here are five of your best options.|
The Canary Islands have an attractive mix of beautiful beaches, great scenery, and colorful culture. Island lovers will certainly be buzzing about the idea of taking their holidays to Tenerife in 2013. With a mix of museums and cultural attractions, in addition to mountains and beaches, it is not surprising that Tenerife is one of the most popular European island destinations. Some people don’t come for the beaches at all, but to trek or bike or ride horses along the scenic mountainous interior trails. Because of its popularity, it easy to book a holiday to Tenerife online and to make sure that you get the best prices available.
Mallorca and Ibiza are the headliners of Spain’s Balearic Islands. Formentera is a small island in the southernmost part of the chain. With no international airport and a relatively small population, this island is much quieter than its more-popular neighbors. Nonetheless, Formentera is a popular spot for sports like diving, kiting, and wind-surfing, so there is plenty to do in the water, though there are also plenty of people who simply spend their time relaxing on the idyllic beaches. Bike trails crisscross the island, and many tourists choose to rent mopeds so that they can cruise to the more-remote beaches. Taking a trip to Formentera requires a little more planning that a holiday in Ibiza or Mallorca, but for people who value a more low-key holiday experience, this is certainly one of the best options in the Mediterranean.
This island off of Croatia’s Dalmatian Coast is one of the most attractive spots in the Adriatic. With historic streets and architecture, picturesque countryside landscapes, and a great party scene, Hvar is one island that certainly offers a diverse mix of attractions for holiday-makers. Some people choose to cruise around the smaller islands in the region and base themselves on Hvar. Take this strategy and you can turn a weekend getaway in Hvar into a weeklong Adriatic adventure with stops at some of the best historic sites, beaches, and bars in the region.
This autonomous Portuguese island is one of the most remote destinations on this list. It sits much closer to the African coast that to the European mainland (though it is only about a 90 minute flight from Lisbon). The lush scenery, rugged landscapes, and trails for hiking, biking, and horseback riding give vacationers as many land-based attractions and ocean and beach options. Surfing, snorkeling, sailing, and fishing are on the agenda as well. The vibe is unmistakably Portuguese, though Anglophones won’t have much trouble communicating as, like Portugal, most people speak some English in Madeira.
These islands sit in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, about 1,500 kilometers from mainland Portugal. Nature dominates much of these lush islands, so if you value fresh air and natural scenery, this is certainly an attractive (albeit hard-to-get-to) destination. Quaint towns, farmhouse inns, and plenty of outdoor activities, from horseback riding and biking to farm visits and sightseeing treks, make it simple to fill up an itinerary while in the Azores. Though it is not really a sun-and-sand destination, there are numerous water-based activities on offer, from sailing and fishing to kayaking and wind surfing. You can rent four-wheelers or even donkeys to reach the more-remote corners of the islands.
