At this rate, WordPress 3.2 will soon exceed the 15 million count that WordPress 3.1 reached just before WordPress 3.2 was released. If you aren’t using WordPress, start today and contribute to the counter’s rise!

iThemes Launches Educator Program
iThemes is launching an outstanding program designed for educators, “focusing on delivering high-quality web design tools and training to the education community.” To get the ball rolling, they’re asking for only 100 qualified educators to apply before October 1st. Those who are accepted into the beta run will receive over 150 high-quality themes, over 20 plugins, 300 hours of professional training, and more as the year continues. Not only is WordPress the most popular blogging platform today, it’s also become quite popular as a class resource. Many teachers are setting up P2-themed blogs for class discussion or simply using WordPress as a base (with no blog element) to provide class-related documents, movies, and more. As someone who was raised in a family of educators, it’s great to see a company like iThemes stepping up to provide such an all-in-one program to help other educators get started with WordPress, and it’s

Which Plugin Can Your Blog Not Live Without?
Building on the discussion from “Do You Really Need All Of Those Plugins?” I’d love to ask what is the one plugin that your blog can’t live without? There are many plugins out there for WordPress, and many of us use an excessive number of them, but there has to be one that you favor above them all. To start of the discussion, I’ll say Akismet. That may sounds like a cop-out, since it comes with every copy of WordPress, but without it I’d still be cleaning out the 39,744 spam comments that we’ve received so far this week. So, what’s your favorite plugin?

Do You Really Need All of Those Plugins?
There has been some interesting discussion on how many plugins you should use on your WordPress blog, and whether that number contributes to any problems along the way. The fact of the matter is, it’s really hard to say. In most situations, using an excessive amount of plugins won’t cause any problems, but plugins use memory when they run, and shared hosting provider love to limit the memory that you can consume at any given moment. If you’re running into memory errors, there are a few things that you can try, but you should probably consider using less plugins or moving to a better host. Outside of hosting limitations, the number of plugins doesn’t play much of a role. We use 36 plugins here, and I have worked on a blog before that used 82, both without issue. If you’re running into other errors, that’s more than likely just one

WordPress Survey Data Made Available
If you’re the kind of person who loves playing with statistics over the weekend, you’re going to love this! The anonymous results from the survey mentioned in this year’s State of the Word have been made available. There’s a lot of fascinating info to collect from the data. The piece that interests me the most is already detailed in the post itself: 6,800 self-employed respondents were responsible for over 170,000 sites personally, and charged a median hourly rate of $50 . . . If each site took only 3 hours to make, that’s $29.5M of work at the average hourly rate. Yes, that’s an impressive amount of money to be generated by folks using a free blogging platform. Which fascinating stats were you able to collect?

The State of the Word in 2011
The State of the Word is given each year at WordCamp San Francisco. It’s basically an address to the entire WordPress community from Matt Mullenweg, sharing some favorite moments from WordPress’s past and some looks into its future, and this year’s State of the Word did not disappoint. Fortunately, the video was published rather quickly this year, so those of you who missed it can enjoy it now. Here are some highlights in no particular order: A survey was issued to the community, and out of 18,000 responses, 2,800 make their living through WordPress, and consultants charge an average of $58 per hour. This year, 22% of newly registered domains are running WordPress. Future versions will include a responsive admin interface which resizes perfectly on all screen sizes, even smart phones. Drag-and-drop media uploads are planned for a future version. Upcoming releases will feature a more guided experience for new

WordCamp San Francisco 2011 Speakers and Program Posted
WordCamp San Francisco is often heralded as the largest WordCamp and sometimes considered to be more of an annual WordPress convention, and there are certainly a ton of people attending this year. If you’re one of the many joining in, an impressive list of speakers, and a program for all three days have been posted. There will be plenty to do this year, and if you’re a plugin developer, you may want to take advantage of the Plugin Security Showdown while you still can. Tickets are mostly sold out, but there do seem to be a few microsponsorship tickets available, and walk-in ticket purchases will be welcome until occupancy is reached. If you can’t make it out to San Francisco this year, there are plenty of WordCamps happening soon elsewhere, including Los Angeles and Salt Lake City.

How WordPress Beat Joomla!
This is a Guest Post by Dan Norris. Dan might be writing more for Weblog Tools Collection in the near future. So please stay tuned. 5 years ago when I started Web Circle I did a bunch of research on which CMS to choose and decided on Joomla!. For a year or so it was the CMS we used for pretty much every website and it was very sophisticated for what it could do at the time – particularly with the growing extensions directory. However as time went on and WordPress got better and better we gradually moved to using WordPress for most of our small business websites. Since these days we focus predominantly on small business website design, WordPress has become the platform we use for the majority of our new sites (note we also still use Joomla!). In 2006 In 2006 WordPress was seen mainly as a blogging

TimThumb Security Vulnerability
A zero day vulnerability has been found in TimThumb, a popular image resizing script used by several WordPress themes. The person who discovered the vulnerability has issued a fix and instructions to detect any lingering hacks. As described on the VaultPress blog, “The vulnerability allows third parties to upload and execute arbitrary PHP code in the TimThumb cache directory. Once the PHP code has been uploaded and executed, your site can be compromised however the attacker likes.” The folks at Sucuri have constructed a great list of just a few affected WordPress themes, just to give you idea of how many themes use TimThumb. If your theme uses TimThumb, contact your theme author for an update immediately, or download the latest version if it has already been updated. If your theme author is not willing to offer an update, it’s probably time for a new theme, but you can also
